Responding with Compassion: Trauma-Informed Care for Older Adults across Cultures
Up to 90% of older adults have experienced at least one traumatic event in their lifetime. By integrating cultural sensitivity and humility into trauma-informed care practices, healthcare, social services, human services, and senior care providers can offer compassionate, effective, and person-centered support that recognizes the unique experiences of older adults across diverse cultural backgrounds. This approach not only promotes healing and recovery but also contributes to an overall inclusive and equitable care environment for older adults.
Training Objectives:
• Understand foundational trauma-informed care principles.
• Recognize shared and culturally specific trauma among Tribal Elders, LGBTQ+ older adults, and new immigrant elders (Somali focus).
• Apply communication, service delivery, and organizational strategies with cultural responsiveness.
• Identify one key action you will take to integrate trauma-informed principles into your role/position.
